The Howick Ratepayers and Residents Association (HRRA) is seeking adjustments to the viewshaft protection around Stockade Hill.
By putting in place a viewshaft, Auckland Council is following through with the requirement won by the HRRA at the hearings of the Unitary Plan when Judge David Fitzpatrick recommended that the council work with HRRA to establish a new viewshaft for Stockade Hill, said HRRA chair Gayleen Mackereth.
Since the official Plan Change 3 creating the new viewshaft to preserve the views from the Rotary rotunda (or “toposcope” ) indicating the islands of the Gulf and other geographical features visible from Stockade Hill, HRRA has been “hard at work checking the fine print and re-measuring some of the assumptions in the proposed viewshaft”.
“HRRA is preparing an extensive submission applauding the work which has gone into the viewshaft preparation but recommending that the viewshaft be extended to the apex of Stockade Hill in line with the low rise Howick Village Centre Plan and are also urging protection for the views as one enters Howick along Ridge Rd,” Mrs Mackereth said.
“HRRA is also drawing attention to the larger view from Stockade Hill with views to the city and Sky Tower and at least seven volcanic cones, views which, they feel, are all worthy of viewshaft protection.”
Mrs Mackereth said they are disappointed that the Mixed Housing Urban high level intensification zone still applies instead of reversion to Single Housing zone as under Manukau Heritage Zone.
HRRA have been urging citizens to fill in the online submission form to support or amend the proposed viewshaft on the council website. The submission process closes today (September 7).
