Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards

Local future sporting stars are among those recognised in this year’s Young Sportsperson of the Year Awards.

Ritorya Tamilo from Baradene College of the Sacred Heart won the Young Sportswoman of the Year title for basketball and Jacob Avery from Sacred Heart College claimed the Young Sportsman of the Year honours.

The awards were held at Eden Park on November 23 with more than 600 people in attendance.

They’ve been held since 1991 to celebrate the outstanding sporting achievements of Auckland secondary school students.

Guest speaker Olympian Sarah Cowley-Ross inspired the audience with journalist and TV presenter Wendy Petrie the Master of Ceremonies and the Saint Kentigern College Kapa Haka opening the evening with a performance.

A total of 217 students – 32 from local schools – were recognised for their sporting success, whether finalist or winner, these students have been selected as the top three for their sporting code.

Along with the sports awards, students were recognised for their achievements on the international stage which included the Commonwealth Games.
