After more than 11 years as principal of Howick Primary School, Leyette Callister is leaving Auckland and her principalship at the end of term three.
To leave a lasting legacy she has donated fruit trees to supplement other food in the orchard.
Helping her to plant the pear and plum trees are Jackson Hotton, Panapa Tuiafiso, Mikayla Hsieh, Mila Bye and Cali Khammy.
Leyette became the principal in August 2011 and has seen a lot of changes and development of school programmes like Garden to Table and Enviroschools where students learn about and take a greater responsibility for the way they manage the environment.
Education has changed dramatically since 1981 when Leyette started her teaching career.
Learning is so much more focused these days on relevant contexts such as sustainability which is creating the confident lifelong learners that Howick Primary is proud to produce.
“I will be sad to leave behind so many amazing students and colleagues as teaching and education in general is the best career a person can have if you want to make a lasting difference to many,” Leyette says.
