PURC steps up for trades

Pakuranga United Rugby Club director of rugby Grant Henson.

The Pakuranga United Rugby Club (PURC) has launched an apprenticeship programme, looking to connect local businesses with potential apprentices.

The brainchild of PURC rugby director Grant Henson, it has been developed after Henson discovered the desire for many school leavers to get into trades.

“In my role I am talking to a lot of school leavers about their plans next year. Primarily, the conversation is about rugby but it became very apparent that a number of these young people wanted to get into trades or apprenticeships but sometimes didn’t know how to go about it.

“We’re lucky as a club to have a number of sponsors and local businesses in our network so we knew there was something we could do to bring together companies wanting apprentices, with these school leavers,” said Henson.

The club has reached out to businesses to register their interest and will then look to match them up with young players based on their areas of interest.

“One of our catch-cries has long been to live local, play local, if we can go one step further and help our players gain local employment, it’s a win for everyone.”
