Want to know the secrets and stories of the Buckland family’s 116 years at Highwic, here’s your chance.

As part of the Auckland Heritage Festival, there will be a guided tour of the Bucklands at Highwic on Sunday, September 27 and Saturday, October 10 from 2pm-3pm.

Once the home of the prominent Buckland family, Highwic, built in 1862, is one of New Zealand’s finest examples of Carpenter Gothic architecture.

This guided tour will allow you to go beyond-the-ropes and explore more than 10 rooms of this rambling mansion with a Highwic Heritage Guide.

The guide will share secrets of the Buckland family as well as show a range of newly-uncovered artefacts which were discovered during a recent archaeological dig and provide clues as to how the Buckland family lived at Highwic.

Alfred Buckland, who had 21 children, bought the farm in 1861 for 2500 pounds.
Buckland was a successful businessman. The beach was named after him. At one stage he owned land in the area and also owned land situated at what is now the commercial district of New Market.

In the late 19th Century and around the turn of the 20th Century, Buckland farmed ostriches at Bucklands Beach. The feathers were sold for hat decoration.

Spaces are limited so bookings are essential. Contact Highwic on 524 5729 or email highwicfunctions@heritage.org.nz
